About Horton Plaza in San Diego, CA
Distinguished by its bright colors and unorthodox architecture, San Diego's Westfield Horton Plaza is a downtown five-level shopping mall, featuring Macy's and Nordstrom's as anchors. For decades, the area was a grassy plaza amid surrounding buildings, with its claim-to-fame being an appearance by then presidential candidate John F. Kennedy who spoke during a campaign stop just days before the 1960 election. Despite skepticism and considerable opposition, development for a shopping plaza began in the early 1980s and opened in 1985. The Plaza was an immediate success, and a major factor in the revitalization of San Diego's adjacent Gaslight District.
Westfield Horton's sometimes startling features, including cul-de-sacs, uneven levels, seemingly out-of-place parapets and eye-catching colors have become a large part of its' appeal, encouraging pedestrian traffic. The overall atmosphere is unique among modern shopping malls, and has been used as a template among other developers.
Conveniently located, the Westfield Horton is within walking distance for most of San Diego's main attractions, including Seaport Village, the Convention Center, Symphony Hall, the San Diego Concourse as well as the Gaslight Quarter.
